The reason why you shouldnt think outside the box
The reason why you shouldnt think outside the boxThe reason why you shouldnt think outside the boxNo five words in the English language make me cringe as much as Lets think outside the box.Coming from someonewho writes about contrarian thinking and non-conformity, that sentence might strike you as odd. After all, you redefine the status quo by stepping outside of it.But heres the problem. Thinking outside the box has become a massive cliche. And cliches, by definition, are unoriginal. Theyre terrible at creating change. When we tell ourselves that were going to think outside the box, we rely on the same methods, the same brainstorming approaches, and consequently the same stale neural pathways. To come up with answers to this cliche, we look in the rear-view mirror and use the same worn-out methods or copy-the-competitor strategies. Its no wonder that the resulting innovations arent innovations at all. Theyre at best insignificant deviations from the status quo.Conventional questions produce conventional results. Its only through unconventional questions - questions that others arent asking - that unconventional results can follow. Here are a few to get you startedWhat if I did the reverse of what everyone else is doing? What would a science-fiction solution look like? How could we destroy our own company? How do I turn this constraint into an advantage? How can I take a 6-month project and finish it in a week? With these questions, the goal isnt to find the right answer - at least not initially. This isnt your high-school chemistry class where the outcome of each experiment was predetermined, leaving no room for curiosity or unexpected insights. If you didnt get the right result, youd be stuck in the lab fiddling with test tubes and beakers, while your classmates trekked off to the movies.Rather, the goal is to ignite a process of open-minded inquiry that can jolt you out of your autopilot mode.Instead of letting the world shape your thoughts, youll let your thou ghts shape the world.Instead of being a passive observer of your reality, youll become an active intervener in it.And instead of simply thinking outside the box, youll be able to bend the box to your will.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. 5 New Trends in Construction and Building
5 New Trends in Construction and Building 5 New Trends in Construction and Building As the economy improves, often the construction business does as wellbut that industry is still looking for sound strategies, not just structures. After the housing dip of a few years ago, value is still on peoples minds as there isnt a guarantee that another downturn couldnt be around the corner.Mike Miller, the Mid-Atlantic Division leader for Southland Industries, Dulles, VA, a mechanical engineering building firm, and Jim Snyder, director of operations for construction company Warrior Group, Columbus, OH, give us insights into the trends to look for this year.1) Single-Design ModelMiller points out that traditionally, engineering documents were created then given to the contractor to re-draw with different information. Now, to save time and money, theres a shift to have it all in-house from engineering to coordination, creating a one-stop shop. Through the proper coordination, models can and shoul d, says Miller, go through engineering right into construction. Thirty month projects can get turned into 24-month projects, he adds.Top trends in construction and building, from single-design models to permanent modular construction, have an impact on the future.2) MaterialsMiller, who has a degree in architectural engineering, says materials such as adapted sheet metal are popular as a guaranteed pressure class for high quality, but its how materials are being used that makes the difference. Going to prefabrication off-site for construction fits right into the ongoing theme of improving schedules. Instead of joining one piece of duct work you can join 20 feet of duct together, Miller says. Its about moving more work from the field into the shop.3) Energy EfficiencyEnergy consumption is always on the mindin construction, says Miller. He notes systems that recover energy through heat wheels and occupancy sensors are becoming vital. An example of the latter are the countless interior conference rooms that can be left empty for weeks. By recognizing carbon dioxide in the room, a sensor changes the ventilation and, therefore, the energy needed.4) Permanent Modular ConstructionSnyder offers that permanent modular construction will be a huge trend in the coming years, saying the construction can easily last more than 50 years. It looks exactly like commercial construction and can be done using many of the same things metal studs, concrete, or even wood. Snyder says modular construction fits particularly well when youre in a time crunch, from fast food restaurants that need to go up quickly to army barracks for military deployment. It also allows you to have an easier time doing the building as you go, he says. Instead of building 100,000 square feet, you can do 25,000 and then later, add on. Snyder, who has a degreein construction science, sees it also becoming a part of high-rise construction and being particularly popular for how it fits in with LEED requirements . The key, he says, is changing peoples minds about what they envision. They see it as boxes, he says, but it can be so many things that you want it to be.5) PossiblyYouAccording to Miller, well-rounded mechanical engineers who can go beyond calculations to fitting into unterstellung coordinated engineering design models will render themselves invaluable. The only question is Are you flexible enough for the challenge?Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Well-rounded mechanical engineers who can go beyond calculations to fitting into these coordinated engineering design models will render themselves invaluable.Nikhil A.
